Web2.0 or Broke2.0?

Anyone notice that the Web 2.0 applications of late are all running Ruby on Rails, PHP, or some other open source language? Not that there is anything wrong with these languages, but I find it interesting that all of these feel-good, social-group sites are all without funds and looking to be

Yeah, there’s a lot of broke ‘college kids’ working on Web2.0 startups. There’s also alot of broke and not-so-broke 30 and 40 somethings working on them too. Why spend money on something you don’t need to spend money on? Ruby on Rails is highly regarded by many people who are highly visible in the Java community. It’s already a very capable framework. And there are plenty of free and capable databases as well (MySQL, Postgres). The point is that now in the ‘web 2.0’ era you don’t need a million bucks to create something that has impact. And if you don’t need to spend a million bucks, why would you? (unless you’re some big corporation that doesn’t know better)
Established corporations don’t generally have creative ideas anymore (maybe a company like Apple is the exception) so to some extent I think they have come to depend on these small, hungry startups to do R&D for them. This is the reason you’re noticing a lot of ‘flipping’.
