Windows Home Server and iPhone
At CES this week, Microsoft announced the forthcoming Windows Home Server and Apple quickly upped the ante with a great new mobile device tagged the iPhone.
Guess who won the limelight?
Apple of course. Their stock is up 8% as of writing and RIM is down 8%. I watched the keynote. I want one of these things and I can’t even use it. (no Cingular in this neck of the woods)
Oh and Microsoft, no one cares. By now everyone has already created a file server for their house, if they need one. And guess what, it’s more than likely Linux based cause it’s free, stable, and you don’t have to pay separately for every option.

File Server? Yeah everyone has a linux file server setup mirroring their data and doing image backups of all of their machines. They are also streaming all their content to their PS3’s and Xbox 360’s with linux. They also have a nice webportoral for easy access to their files and terminal control to all their machines. Not counting the easy plugin creation that allows amazing extensibility to the platform.
I have an iphone and now i remote into my homeserver and watch my videos and listen to my music.
Looking for the esy setup linux distros to do all of this.

Yes, Windows Home Server has proven to be a lot more than what was expected at launch. (Check the date on the original post – almost 2 years old…)
I still am able to do a lot of the things you mentioned with Linux – all for free. Not saying it is as easy as point and click in all cases, but it does save me hundreds of dollars a year in licensing costs for all the machines I have. (Including the saved costs for Windows software such as office, etc)
Plus, I don’t worry anymore about malware, viruses, or a blue screen of death.
