Why We Shouldn’t Use FTP Anymore

Steven Frank offers a few reasons why we should not be using FTP anymore.

Kind of odd considering what he does for a living!

  • Unless tunneled over a secure socket, FTP is 100% insecure. Your password, and the contents of all of your files are sent in the clear, free to be examined or captured by any network hop between you and your server.
  • The spec defines no way of setting the modification dates/times of files. A number of non-standard extensions have arisen to deal with this shortcoming. Some servers support one but not the others. Some support neither. Some claim to support one method but misinterpret the the arguments, treating the timestamps as local time rather than UTC. I’ve seen FTP servers simply drop the connection whenever asked to set a timestamp on a file. For such a simple and necessary operation, it’s chaos.

Blog Comments – Now Moderated!

This is more of an FYI than anything, but if you comment on this blog for the time being (maybe permanently), you will notice that your comments will no longer go live after you submit them.

I had to turn on comment moderation due to one smart ass that kept launching personal attacks on the site. I understand that it is not fair to make everyone suffer for the actions of one, but that’s life. (Remember grade school when the one “bad” kid would ruin things for the whole class? Apparently he has now found my blog.)

I’m sure this will spur his comment level even higher now cause that is exactly what trolls like is attention but I don’t care.

I thought the rest of you deserved an explanation so here it is.

Please remember that I do not moderate comments that have a different viewpoint than me, but rather only comments that are flame war starters and those that launch direct attacks on me or others.

How We Have Failed Our Youth

While browsing our local “free classified ads” site today, I noticed the following:

If you can’t read the text, it is as follows:

I charge from 10$-20$ each time. It depends on the lawn size. I would have to use your mower and gas because my mower sucks.

Professionalism at it’s finest!

This Bud’s For You, InBev?!

In a surprising move today, Anheuser-Busch decided to sell to European competitor, InBev.

Very interesting, almost disturbing how an American icon would sell out so quickly.

Team this up with news this weekend that the government is stepping in to help out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the economy seems to be stumbling more than ever…

Two Movie Reviews

I finally got to use my Netflix subscription the other day and watch a couple of movies that have been sitting on the counter for the last couple of months.

The first was Sin City. I know it’s old already, but it was pretty good. If you liked Crash, you will like Sin City.

The second movie was The Ring 2. I was surprised at how much I liked the movie for the symbolism. The director commentary was almost better than the movie itself. Definitely check it out.

Comment: This was an old draft that I decided to push live today…

Where the Poor Get Richer

A few North Dakotan’s are finding themselves with a lot more money in the bank lately thanks to recent oil booms in North Dakota. In fact many have become what they refer to as “overnight millionaires”, not that you would know it by how they dress or what they drive.

We live in a pretty humble state so I don’t think we are ready for Bentley dealerships yet, even though North Dakota has the more millionaires per capita than any other state.

And you all thought we still had outdoor plumbing and buffaloes roaming the prairie!
